Because someone has to look at the connection before you buy it. American concentrates its Latin America flying in Miami, and MIA connections range from comfortable to a fifty-minute sprint with a terminal change at the end of a long day. The cheapest itinerary on a screen is often that one. An agent checks what the layover actually is, and whether a slightly different departure buys you an easier trip.
